Looking for sports classes for a 5-year-old in Singapore? Start with the child’s interest, confidence and ability to follow simple instructions, then choose a suitable age group and a manageable journey. Basketball, tennis and swimming offer different ways to build movement skills, but the right class depends on the individual child and current availability.
WEsports uses public facilities, condominiums and other privately owned courts or venues. Please check the latest class, space and meeting point before booking or attending.
Which sport should a 5-year-old try?
Basketball: movement and ball skills
Basketball introduces dribbling, passing, catching, shooting and taking turns. Younger beginners benefit from activities adapted to their age and experience. WEsports kids basketball options cover ages 5–16, with the appropriate group checked before joining.
A trial costs S$20 per player. Group packages are S$45 for one lesson, S$160 for four lessons, or S$300 for eight lessons. Explore kids basketball classes in Singapore and the current basketball class options.
Tennis: balance and hand-eye coordination
Tennis introduces tracking a ball, racket control, footwork and simple rally skills. Choose an age-appropriate beginner group rather than assuming every class is suitable for a five-year-old. The class finder includes a usual 4–6-year-old option at Yio Chu Kang; court slots and space must be confirmed.
Group fees are per player per lesson: S$110 for one hour, S$160 for 1.5 hours, or S$210 for two hours. Compare tennis lesson formats and fees, check the tennis class finder, and read what age children can start tennis lessons.
Swimming: confidence in the water
For swimming, tell us whether your child is comfortable entering the pool, putting their face in the water and following instructions. Lesson placement should account for water confidence and ability as well as age. A child who needs more attention may suit private coaching.
Group lessons have up to six swimmers. A four-lesson package costs S$140 per swimmer, with each lesson lasting 45 minutes. Private four-lesson packages, also 45 minutes per lesson, cost S$320 for one swimmer, S$360 for two, S$400 for three, or S$480 for four. Private prices are the total package fee for the stated group.

How to choose a suitable class
- Interest: Ask which activity the child would like to try.
- Readiness: Consider comfort with a new coach, taking turns and following short instructions.
- Group: Check age range, level and how the coach adapts activities.
- Travel: Choose an area and time that fit the family’s routine.
- Expectations: Focus on participation, confidence and small improvements.
What to expect at the first lesson
A first session is a chance to become familiar with the coach, environment and simple skills. Let the coach know about previous experience and relevant needs. Ask what equipment to bring before the session; do not assume a racket, ball or swimming equipment will be supplied.
Prepare suitable clothing, water and the equipment confirmed for the class. For swimming, parents should follow the venue’s supervision rules. Read our guides to a first basketball class, first tennis lesson or first swimming lesson.
Find a sports class near your family
For basketball, compare options around Punggol, Sengkang, Hougang, Khatib and Canberra. The basketball location guide explains how to use the live schedule. A planned session means you can register interest; it is not a confirmed class.
Tennis options depend on the player’s age, location and public-court availability. Swimming arrangements are checked against your preferred area, ability and schedule. We will confirm a suitable option rather than promise a session from a general location list.
Questions parents often ask
Does my child need experience?
No previous experience is needed for an appropriate beginner class. Tell us what the child has tried so we can check placement.
Should we start several sports at once?
You can start with one activity and see how your child responds. A manageable routine with time for rest and play matters more than a packed schedule.
Are all lessons suitable for five-year-olds?
No. Ask us to check the age range, current group and coaching arrangement. General programme pages do not mean every session accepts every age.
Can we book immediately?
Check class suitability, available space, timing, venue and package terms first. We will explain the booking and payment steps for the confirmed option.
Ask WEsports for a suitable option
Send the sport, your child’s age, previous experience, preferred area and available days or times. We will reach out with relevant options and confirm the details before booking.
